Using H1 Text for Search Engine Optimization

The use of different display and formatting tags throughout your content can help give you an easy SEO boost. One formatting tag that is particularly important is the H1 title or headline tag. It’s the highest level of formatting, and therefore can carry some interesting benefits for your website.

The way that the H1 tag is traditionally used is to differentiate your headline or title from the rest of your content. In this way visitors can easily make a visual differentiation and can see what your page is all about. However, as mentioned above, formatting tags often bring to the table an additional meaning besides the visual effect that they provide.

So when you visually highlight a piece of your content with the H1 attribute, you are also implying a meaning to that content. Because H1 is used for your title, you are giving the importance of being “page title” to any piece of content you place within that tags. It adds relevance and importance to what is found there.

You can therefore think of the H1 attribute being the single most important piece of formatted text on any given page. Because of this meaning, it can also be an invaluable way to help target your visitors and get ranked in the search engines through SEO.

When you use the H1 tag on a webpage, you are giving that page a headline or a title. The headline or title is the most important piece of content on that page that you have. It tells people what the entire page is all about. So when you include your keywords into your H1 tags, you are showcasing your keywords as the single most important element of your entire page.

By doing this, you are essentially saying to the search engines that your page has an extremely high relevancy for your targeted keywords. This will make it easier for you to gain an edge with your SEO, and improve your standing in the search engines. You are directly telling the search engines that your page is directly about your keyword.

Some people have questioned whether or not the H1 title tag is still effective for SEO. This is because various people have completed conflicting studies showing that display tags such as this no longer produce any noticeable change in rankings for a particular web page.

But at this time that has not been proven, and the search engines have not said as such. Therefore you have to assume that the H1 tag is still in usage, and most people do report that they see significant gains when using this strategy effectively. You always have to remember however that with SEO, nothing is guaranteed and you always have to be ready to change your strategies.

The use of the H1 formatting tag on your web pages can lead to huge gains in the search engines. You have the opportunity to highlight your targeted keywords as the most important content on your page. As a result, you gain an improved association with that keyword and get ranked higher for it.
